LeeWay Odyssey Concludes Successful Search for Shackleton’s Quest

June 12, 2024 (St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador) - LeeWay Marine is thrilled to share news of the successful search for Sir Ernest Shackleton’s Quest, alongside partners at the Royal Canadian Geographical Society (RCGS) and the Marine Institute (MI) at Memorial University, under the marine and survey management services of Miawpukek Horizon.

Quest, an integral part of Shackleton’s final Antarctic expedition, and the vessel in which he died on, sank in 1962 in the Labrador Sea, after conversion to a seal-hunting vessel. The teams from RCGS and MI used a sophisticated side scan sonar system, deployed from LeeWay Odyssey, to positively identify the wreck this week.

"Our team was very excited when we were asked to be part of this historic search”, said Greg Veinott, VP Business Operations & Programs. "Today is a momentous day that creates closure for a decades-long mystery about the final resting place of Quest. We thank all our partners for the opportunity to be involved, and our crew for their efforts in assisting with the search.”
